The first Innsbruck Airport was first built in 1925 in Reichenau, a district east of the city. In 1946, city authorities decided to build a new airport in the western part of the city, in the district of Höttinger Au near Kranebitten. The new airport – which is still in operation today – opened in 1948 under the name Innsbruck Kranebitten Airport.
