East Midlands Airport: Historical Background

From 1943 to 1946, today’s East Midlands Airport was used by the Royal Air Force as a military airbase under the name RAF Castle Donington. After the base was no longer required, the site was laid to waste. In the 1960s, to relieve the Burnaston Airfield, located south of Derby, the decision was made to revive the former military airfield. In 1963, the East Midlands Airport Joint Committee purchased the site and began the construction of a new commercial airport for the East Midlands one year later. This was ceremonially opened by Prince Philip in 1965.

In 1993, East Midlands Airport became the first airport in the United Kingdom to be privatised. It was purchased by the National Express Group and, in the years that followed, the group strongly invested in the expansion of the airport. As a result, a new passenger terminal and a freight terminal were opened in 1996 and 1997 respectively. The runway was extended in the year 2000. Since 2001, the Manchester Airport Group has been in charge of the airport’s operation. Today, more than 4 million passengers check in at the airport annually and it records over 70,000 flights each year.

Private Jet to East Midlands Airport: Visit Birmingham, Nottingham, or Derby

The East Midlands comprise several cities and municipalities. The town of Castle Donington with its castle, which is well worth seeing, is just two kilometres away. In Derby, you will find Derby Cathedral, the seat of the Bishop of Derby, among other sights. The city also features a Rolls Royce factory.

The city of Nottingham lies on a 40-metre-high sandstone ridge, where William the Conqueror built a castle in 1068. A cave system was built into the ridge which, in the past, was home to poor citizens and during the Second World War, served as an air-raid shelter. Today, the caves can be visited and also accommodate a few pubs. According to legend, Nottingham is also the home of Robin Hood. In Leicester, one of the oldest cities in England, you will mainly find Victorian style architecture – the city centre is characterised by the famous Clock Tower. Leicester Market is the largest covered market in Europe. Other sights worth seeing are Leicester Castle, the cathedral and St. Mary’s Church.
