Book Your Private Jet to Lisbon

History of Lisbon Airport

Starting in the 1930s, air traffic used the small airfield Campo Internacional de Aterragem not far from the current airport. Due to its favourable geographic location, the aerodrome quickly gained in importance. In the early days of aviation, the most western capital of Europe was the ideal starting point for intercontinental flights. At first, seaplanes took off from and landed in Lisbon. With the development of new aircraft, increasingly large passenger aircraft took off for America. In order to increase capacity, the Portuguese government began the construction of Lisbon (LIS) Airport in 1938.

The new airport opened during the Second World War, in 1942. The Salazar regime in Portugal, in which Portugal maintained its neutrality, allowed both German and British airlines to use Lisbon Airport. During the Second World War, the airport also served as an escape route. Many people tried to flee Europe as well as the French Protectorate of Morocco to America via the Portuguese airport. Portugal mainly authorised members of the European high nobility and famous people, including the German novelist Erich Maria Remarque, to use Lisbon Airport as a transit station on their way to exile in America. The classic film "Casablanca" from 1942 references this use of the airport.

After the end of the war, the number of passengers increased exponentially, reaching 100,000 in 1954. In 2007, a second terminal, new gates and jet bridges were built. In 2012, the government decided to expand the Montijo military air base to become an additional international airport. In 2016, Lisbon (LIS) Airport was renamed Humberto Delgado after the political opponent of the Salazar regime.
