Air Travel in Anatolia: The History of Ankara Airport

Before Ankara Esenboğa Airport was built in the 1950s, Ankara Güvercinlik, now used exclusively as a military airport, served as the main destination for civil aviation in the region. Ultimately, however, the older airport could no longer serve capacity. After much planning and construction work, Ankara Airport opened in 1955. ESB Airport was the second international civilian airport to be built in Turkey after Istanbul's Ataturk Airport. At the time of its construction, the airport had only one runway, a passenger building, and a maintenance hangar.

In order to meet the ever-increasing volume of passengers visiting the airport, a number of large-scale improvements were made. For example, the construction of a new hangar and a maintenance hall, as well as a new terminal. At the beginning of the 2000s, extensive reconstruction and modernisation work took place, in the course of which the General Aviation Terminal was built. Today, Ankara Esenboğa Airport serves the travel needs of more than 13 million passengers and records more than 105,000 flight movements per year.
