History of Northolt Airport
RAF Northolt Airport was opened in 1915 and used as a military air base for the Royal Flying Corps. During the Second World War, it was an important hub for the Royal Air Force. Many famous aircraft departed from the airport throughout the Battle of Britain, including squadrons of Spitfires and Hurricanes, and it also became a base for units of the Polish Air force. The nearby Polish War Memorial commemorates the Polish airmen who lost their lives during the war.
From 1946, Northolt airport became a major operator of civilian flights while Heathrow airport, just 10 kilometres away, was having its first terminal built. Charter flights have been allowed to both land and take-off from Northolt private airport since the 1980s. Here passengers can enjoy the greatest levels of privacy and discretion, with virtually no queues to stand in. In 2015, RAF Northolt celebrated its 100th birthday.
