History of St Petersburg Airport
Construction of the airport began in 1931, when the city was named Leningrad. The city’s earlier name is reflected in the airport’s current code name: LED. The first regular connection was between Leningrad and Moscow with further domestic destinations added at the end of the 1930s. At that point, construction of the airport’s terminal building was halted by the Second World War and the airport sustained damage by occupying German troops in the nearby Pulkovo hills during the Siege of Leningrad. Civil aviation did not resume until 1948. The official opening of the terminal in 1951 marked the long-awaited completion of the airport’s construction.
The airport has served all Russian destinations as well as a growing number of international destinations since 1964. In 1973, a second terminal was opened and the airport was renamed for the neighbouring town of Pulkovo. Designed by architect Alexandr Zyk, the terminal is a masterpiece of Russian post-modernism.
St Petersburg’s Pulkovo International Airport was expanded by a new arrivals hall on the occasion of the city’s 300 year jubilee celebration. The 10L/28R runway was modernised in 2006. The airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) means that flights to St Petersburg are unhindered by adverse weather conditions.
Between 2010 to 2013, construction of a new terminal took place. This new terminal was built in order to make connections between domestic and international flights easier. Most recently, the old Pulkovo-1 building reopened after renovation in 2015.

Pulkovo Airport is located 20 kilometres outside the city centre. For a number of years, modern office complexes and shopping centres have been built in the vicinity of the airport. The centre of St Petersburg is easy to reach from the airport thanks to the large motorway that encircles the city.

The airport is 20 kilometres from the city centre, reached by car in about half an hour. Upon disembarking your St Petersburg flight, you can be driven by limousine to the centre via Pulkovo Highway, which turns into Moscovsky Prospect – a quick connection into the city. The ring road KAD, completed in 2007, can take you more directly to locations in the north quarter of the city, avoiding any congestion in the city itself.
