When flying on a private or business flight to St Petersburg, you’re not beholden to commercial airline schedules and long waiting times. When you fly with JetApp, your time is your own.

History of St Petersburg Airport

Construction of the airport began in 1931, when the city was named Leningrad. The city’s earlier name is reflected in the airport’s current code name: LED. The first regular connection was between Leningrad and Moscow with further domestic destinations added at the end of the 1930s. At that point, construction of the airport’s terminal building was halted by the Second World War and the airport sustained damage by occupying German troops in the nearby Pulkovo hills during the Siege of Leningrad. Civil aviation did not resume until 1948. The official opening of the terminal in 1951 marked the long-awaited completion of the airport’s construction.

The airport has served all Russian destinations as well as a growing number of international destinations since 1964. In 1973, a second terminal was opened and the airport was renamed for the neighbouring town of Pulkovo. Designed by architect Alexandr Zyk, the terminal is a masterpiece of Russian post-modernism.

St Petersburg’s Pulkovo International Airport was expanded by a new arrivals hall on the occasion of the city’s 300 year jubilee celebration. The 10L/28R runway was modernised in 2006. The airport’s Instrument Landing System (ILS) means that flights to St Petersburg are unhindered by adverse weather conditions.

Between 2010 to 2013, construction of a new terminal took place. This new terminal was built in order to make connections between domestic and international flights easier. Most recently, the old Pulkovo-1 building reopened after renovation in 2015.

Charter Flights from St Petersburg

Russia’s third busiest airport is located in a business, science, and cultural centre of the Commonwealth of Independent States. Additionally, St Peterburg’s proximity to Central Europe, and especially to the Baltic States, make it a popular departure and arrival point for private flights.

Passengers travelling by private jet to St Petersburg are unencumbered by the stringent rules that apply to commercial flights, which greatly shorten the amount of time spent waiting for take-off, and – above all – waiting in queues at check-in. Most charter flights from St Petersburg Airport take off to destinations in nearby Baltic and northern European countries:

  • St Petersburg ✈ Helsinki (EFHK/HEL): approx. 50 minutes
  • St Petersburg ✈ Vilnius (EYVI/VNO): approx. 1 hour 15 minutes
  • St Petersburg ✈ Tallinn (EETN/TLL): approx. 50 minutes
  • St Petersburg ✈ Oslo Gardermoen (ENGM / OSL): approx. 1 hour 45 minutes
  • St Petersburg ✈ Nice (LFMN / NCE): approx. 3 hours 17 minutes

A flight to Helsinki or Tallinn takes less than an hour whereas Vilnius and Oslo are each under the two hour mark. For a little longer flight of three and a quarter hours from Neva Bay, the payoff increases correspondingly as you land on the beautiful Côte d’Azur.

St Petersburg Airport’s runways are suited for both short distance jets as well as long haul aircraft. St Petersburg Pulkovo Airport is the only airport in Russia where the double-decker Airbus A380 "superjumbo" jet is cleared to land.

The runways at LED Airport, which are both operated according a weather independent Instrument Landing System, have the following specifications:

Runway Length and width Surface
10R/28L 3,780 m x 60 m Concrete
10L/28R 3,397 m x 60 m Concrete

Private Jet to St Petersburg: Discover the City of the Tsars

St Petersburg lies in northwest Russia on the Gulf of Finland. The Neva River flows through the city and empties into Neva Bay. The number of islands in the river’s delta has led to the city’s nickname: "Venice of the North." The old town is rich in architectural treasures and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The cityscape of the former Tsar’s residence is dominated by Baroque and Neoclassical buildings, including over 2,000 palaces and other royal-purposed structures.

Above all, Nevsky Prospect is home to a vast number of well-preserved historical buildings and is also the main shopping street in the city. Following Moscow’s GUM, St Petersburg boasts the second largest shopping mall in Russia – Gostiny Dvor – which is also located on the street. St Petersburg’s attractions are numerous. Of particular interest are St Issac’s Cathedral and the Peter and Paul Fortress. St Petersburg is also home to countless museums, none more famous or important than the Winter Palace. The palace’s incredible and vast collections spanning 120 rooms across six buildings is in itself worth a flight to St Petersburg. For music and theatre lovers, the Mariinsky is revered around the world.

Modern day St Petersburg is also an important business centre which is home to numerous Russian companies as well as offices representing a wide spectrum of international businesses.
