History of Berlin Schönefeld Airport

From 1934 to 1945, the Henschel Aircraft Company constructed more than 14,000 aeroplanes at its production plant outside of Berlin. The company’s three runways – each 800 metres long – later became the basis for Schönefeld Airport (SXF). Towards the end of WWII, the grounds were occupied by Soviet troops, who demolished the factory. In the following years, railway and agricultural machinery were repaired there until Soviet military leaders ordered the construction of a municipal airport in 1947. The new airport was mainly used by the Russian airline Aeroflot and the East German airline Interflug. Beginning in the 1960s, it was also used by travellers from West Germany for flights to Eastern Bloc countries.

By 1990, Berlin Schönefeld Airport had been expanded and renovated numerous times. After the reunification of Germany, Interflug was shut down and the airport struggled with a dramatic drop in passenger numbers. In 1996, the city of Berlin, the state of Brandenburg, and the national government – who jointly own and operate Berlin’s airports under the auspices of the Berlin Brandenburg Airport Authority (FBB) – decided to build an international airport for Berlin and Brandenburg directly adjacent to Berlin Schönefeld. Construction began in 2006.

In the earlier 2000s, passenger traffic at Schönefeld first steadied and then picked up, with numbers continuing to increase as Berlin’s popularity grew. Schönefeld Airport will continue to serve the German capital’s air travellers alongside Tegel (TXL), at least until the opening of the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER). The original plan was for the new airport to replace both Tegel and Schönefeld, but with air travel to Berlin predicted to continue growing, the future of both airports remains a topic of discussion.
