History of Münster Osnabrück Airport
The site of today’s Münster Airport received an official license for gliders in 1954. From 1957 it also served motorised aircraft operated by the Greven Aviation Association. In 1966, the cities of Münster, Osnabrück, and Greven were joined by Münster and Tecklenburg counties to establish the company Münster Osnabrück Airport GmbH. Expansion of the airfield began in 1968, initially to a 2,000 metre-long runway, and later extended to its current length of 2,170 metres in 1976. The airport’s official opening took place in May 1972. Further expansion and modernisation has continued since that time, including the addition of a second terminal.
Negotiations began on a further extension of the runway to 3,600 metres in 1994. However, because some of the affected area is part of a nature reserve, the plan didn’t come to fruition and therefore part of the runway is grass. Today Münster Airport receives almost 800,000 passengers on over 34,000 flight movements annually.
