Charter Flights to Frankfurt Airport: Germany’s Largest Aviation Hub
With 60.8 million passengers per year (2016), Frankfurt am Main Airport is the largest airport in Germany. In Europe, only London Heathrow, Paris Charles de Gaulle and Amsterdam Schiphol are larger than Frankfurt Airport. As the headquarters of Lufthansa and Condor, and as an international gateway for United Airlines, the airport is an important international hub that offers direct flights from Frankfurt to all major destinations in the world.
Frankfurt Airport (FRA): From Early Aerodrome to International Airport
Frankfurt has always been the centre of German aviation. As early as the 1920s, roughly 2,500 aircraft, carrying around 5,500 passengers, landed in Frankfurt per year. At that time, however, airships were still in operation and Rebstock in Frankfurt-Bockenheim served primarily as an airfield for airships.
In 1936, the Rhein-Main aircraft terminal was finally opened at Stadtwald, where Frankfurt Airport is still located to this day. On May 6, 1937, the airship LZ 129 Hindenburg exploded while flying from Frankfurt to New York, after which all remaining German large-scale airships were scrapped in the following years and aeroplanes became the dominant mode of air travel. Air traffic in Frankfurt increased rapidly: 27 airlines served the airport in the 1930s, with connections to almost all major European cities. Frankfurt Airport became the central point of distribution of airmail to America.
During the Second World War, the Luftwaffe assumed control of the airport. It was not until 1946, during which time the airport was controlled by the US military, that a non-military flight landed at FRA Airport for the first time. While the airport remained an important base for the allies, especially during the Berlin Airlift, the predecessors of today's runways were expanded, so that, in the 1950s, civil aviation once again became the airport’s main purpose. Since then, Frankfurt am Main has been an international aviation hub, constantly adapting and expanding to accommodate the ever-increasing volume of passengers passing through the airport.

The growth in passenger numbers continues uninterrupted year on year. Additionally, 2.1 million tonnes of freight pass through the airport each year - the largest cargo volume in Europe and the eighth-largest in the world. In order to meet the growing requirements made on the airport, considerable expansion work is currently taking place at Frankfurt Airport. Not only are Terminals 1 and 2 being expanded, but Fraport AG, the operator of Frankfurt Airport, has also commissioned the construction of a third terminal.
For flights to and from FRA Airport, there are currently four runways, upon which about 77% of the aircraft are ICAO class Medium and about 22% are aircraft carrying more than 136 tonnes of take-off weight.
