Lanzarote is the third busiest airport in the Canary Islands after Gran Canaria and Tenerife South. Flights from Lanzarote are primarily to countries in the European Union, with flights to the United Kingdom and Germany making up about 60 percent of international air traffic originating from Lanzarote. Of course, with a private jet from Lanzarote, any destination is an option.

History of Lanzarote Airport

Construction of Lanzarote (ACE) Airport began in 1936. However, at the time, it was still a makeshift airport. In 1940, the Spanish Air Force decided to build a proper airport for the the defence of the island. This laid the foundation for today's Lanzarote Airport, which was built just 5 kilometres west of the capital, Arrecife, directly on the Cosa de Guacimata in the municipality of San Bartolomé.

Not long after its construction, Lanzarote Airport began to be used used for civil aviation on an occasional basis. With that purpose in mind, part of the main building was rebuilt in 1946 to make the check-in process proceed more smoothly. The new facilities were well received, and within the next year, civilian flights to Lanzarote became standard.

At this time, the runway at Lanzarote Airport wasn’t yet paved. This took place as part of modernisation measures which began in the 1950s in response to increased flight volume. The runway was then completely rebuilt in the 1960s, making the airport suitable for night flights. Later that decade, a larger terminal building, electric power station, radio centre, technical area, and further buildings were built. Following these extensive modernisations and expansions, Lanzarote Airport opened to domestic and international passenger traffic in March 1970.

Additional renovations took place in the following decades; the passenger terminal was expanded, a modern VASIS system was installed, and a fire protection building was built. By the end of the 1990s, the terminal had adequate space and structure to support seven million passengers a year. It wasn’t long before a new control tower, improved arrival access, and additional parking spaces capped off the airport’s many improvements.

Lanzarote was praised as a model for sustainable development by the World Tourism Organization. The island’s capital, Arrecife, home to half of the island’s population, has evolved from a small fishing town to the commercial and cultural centre of Lanzarote. Exploring the harbour and the rugged coast helps one to understand the source of this city’ name, which means something along the lines of "rocky reef". Outside of the city, there are a number of surprises to be found, from the geysers in the national park, to cactus gardens, a former fortress now used to exhibit modern art, and a network of tunnels formed by lava; Lanzarote offers something unexpected beyond just the typical beach holiday.
