Karlsruhe Airport: Historical Background

Karlsruhe Baden-Baden Airport was built in 1951 and initially served as a base for the French air force. Originally, the airbase was a vital part of NATO’s Cold War European defence planning. The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), which had been promised a similar airbase, but which was not completed in time, was granted control of Karlsruhe Airport by NATO in 1953. The base, which was then called RCAF Baden-Söllingen Station, remained under RCAF control until 1993 when the Canadian air force decided to cease operations. In the following year, the city of Karlsruhe, together with surrounding cities, towns, and municipalities, decided to convert the former military airfield into a regional airport.

The first private jet from Karlsruhe Baden-Baden flew to Palma de Mallorca in May 1997. In 1998, the first scheduled flights from Karlsruhe to Basel took place. In 2001, the Baden-Airpark GmbH, which still operates the airport to this day, was founded under the majority shareholder Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH. In 2003, the Airpark Business Centre was completed with large shopping and office spaces. A new terminal was opened in 2005 and a hotel was constructed on the airport grounds in 2009. Thanks to its long runway and state-of-the-art technology, Karlsruhe Baden-Baden is today a very popular airport that handles more than 1 million passengers every year on more than 36,000 flight movements.
