History of Memmingen Allgau Airport
Originally an airfield, Memmingen Airport was built in 1937. In the 80 years since, the airport developed into one of the three major commercial airports in Bavaria. As the region enjoys an economic boom, the airport has been rapidly expanding and undergoing improvements to meet growing demand.
The airfield in Memmingen was first used in 1935 to serve small propeller aircraft. Two years later, local authorities constructed Memmingen Airport on the same site as the original airfield with financial assistance from the German Aviation Ministry. During the course of the Second World War, however, the airport’s entire infrastructure was destroyed by a series of bombing raids. After the war, the US military occupied the airport and used it as a training ground for USAF pilots until 1954. In 1955, the airport’s infrastructure was finally rebuilt. From 1959 to 2003, the airfield was home to a bomber wing of the German Air Force. In 2003, following a large-scale restructuring of the German armed forces, Memmingen ceased to function as an air base of the Bundeswehr.
In 2002, Allgäu Airport GmbH & Co. KG was created and assumed control of the newly-founded civilian airport. The first civilian flights flew from Memmingen Airport in 2003, after the withdrawal of the air force. In the decades since, the airport has undergone regular construction work in order to expand its capacity and improve the range of services on offer. As early as 2007, regular operations began and the airport quickly reached an annual passenger volume of 900,000 passengers per year.
The most recent development programme began in 2010, when a new arrival hall and two departure gates were added to Memmingen Airport’s growing list of facilities. In addition, the runway was expanded, taxiways optimised, and new parking lots were built. In the same year, an Instrument Landing System was installed and the airport’s operating hours were extended.
